Escaping reality

So I started reading books again. Can’t believe it’s been 14 years since I last read a book. Phew.

During a short oh, what the hell moment I ordered Options, The Secret Life Of Steve Jobs from Amazon. Usually I tend to avoid Amazon like the plague, for they completely ass**** you on shipping costs, but for about $12 the book was on it’s way, and arrived at my doorstep not even a week later.

I vigorously read the book while on the subway and realized that I in fact enjoyed reading a book. Before I was under the impression that the whole reason of reading books over watching movies was silly at best (Like reading someone else’s fantasies is any less bad than watching them on a screen. Don’t kid yourself), but it was very comforting to loose myself in the words I was reading. A nice step out of reality, if you will.

So about a week ago I went to the Kyobo book store and picked up Harry Potter (And The Sorcerer’s Stone), and The Road. Ironically I just before heard about The Road because they made a movie out of it. I decided to get started with Harry Potter first, then jump to The Road.

These days, during lunch time, I head out to Starbucks with my book, VAIO and headphones. I enjoy stepping outside for a bit, leaving everything behind me, and just sit there, enjoying my music and book. I have this one spot where I sit every time (If someone else didn’t pick it already) that gives me a wee bit of sunlight for maybe about 15 minutes, when the sun can peek inbetween two nearby buildings.

    Dave,
I can’t imagine not reading. I’m on my last book at the moment and am going to go into withdrawal unless I can borrow something from someone tomorrow or hit the bookstore.

Reading is so much better than a move and cheaper too. it takes about 2 hours to watch a movie, but read the same book and it’s probably closer to 5-8 hours for about the same amount of money.

The Steve Jobs book sounds interesting – I’d like to borrow it. I’ll swap you for “Pour Your Heart Into It” which is a book about the starbucks CEO – I’m sure you’ll like it.

Dave, at least I would have expected you to perform the nonsensical act of reading on an eReader. Guess you are waiting for Apple… Then again, I must say that YoungDoo’s picture of you holding one of those old fashioned piles of paper (neatly sequentially bound) has a nice mood to it. So I forgive :-)

Posted my last fatherly comment, only to find out that my son is now moderating me… Gone is not only the freedom of expression, but with it the glorious prerogative of fathers to educate their children. I patiently will await the decision of my son as to the admissibility of my parental advice. Anxiously.

No matter how good eReaders will get, nothing beats holding a real book. Not saying I won’t end up using an eReader, of course :) .

Best photo of you EVAR. Really nice, I have a few spots like that here where I live too, I feel they are important to have around.

Also, I’m pretty sure Matt Damon would play you in your life turned into a movie. DAVE: GADGET FREAK. Featuring his beloved sidekick the lovely Macbook Pro.

the sunlight will move away from that seat if as the season changes. that’s the time you would know that time flies, things change, and life evolves.
